Goodbye Mr. C and Mrs. Cleaver and thanks for the memories

Those of us in my generation grew up watching re-runs of Leave it to Beaver and first runs of Happy Days. We watched Eddie Haskell go from sneaky and shallow to ultra-polite when speaking with Mrs. Cleaver. We watched America’s favorite Dad, Mr. Cunningham, raise a son, a daughter and, of course, The Fonz. In the past few days, we had to say goodbye to Barbara Billingsley (Mrs. Cleaver) and Tom Bosley (Mr. Cunningham).

This all brings back happy times in my life. Summers spent in Oklahoma with my aunt and uncle were the highlight of the year. Oatmeal every morning like only my uncle could make it started the day. Playing with friends made every summer, riding the bikes my uncle always came up with during the day and catching fireflies and chasing bats at night.

I also remember watching reruns of Star Trek (the ONLY generation at the time), Leave it to Beaver, and, of course, watching Uncle Zeb’s Cartoon Camp on Saturday mornings. After the end of summertime, Leave it to Beaver wasn’t that important. Uncle Zeb wasn’t available where I lived.

Happy Days was, I believe, an escape for my parents and probably parents everywhere. It reminded people of a time when America was prospering and things were happening quickly. We watched Richie and Joanie grow up before our eyes. And we fell in love with The Fonz.

It’s been forever since I’ve seen either Leave it to Beaver or Happy Days, but I find myself wanting to search Nickelodeon for some memories.

So, farewell Mrs. Cleaver and Mr. C, and thanks for the memories.

A few months ago, I took a look at Beezid because I wanted to find out if it was a scam, or a legitimate product (article here). Here I go again. I was perusing the interwebs and came across Satellite Direct. As I read the site, I was a bit skeptical and my scam alarm was going off. So, I did some research.

First I visited the Satellite Direct website. Then, I spent quite a bit of time on internet search engines trying to find any reason this isn’t legitimate – or legal, for that matter. Everything I read told me this was 100% legal due to the Free to Air protocol, which allows for receiving unencrypted transmissions.

I kept pulling up articles and user reviews praising Satellite Direct and the channel selections. The reviewers also praised the digital HD quality of the channels they watched. Some pretty reputable sites had very positive things to say about Satellite Direct. I even visited a good friend of mine who decided to just pay the price and see what happened. So, we did.

Lindsay? Lindsay who?

Lindsay Lohan, according to reports, is suing E*Trade over a commercial she says is a parody of her. Unless you live under a rock, I’m sure you’ve seen the E*Trade babies talk about the “milkaholic Lindsey”, but in case you haven’t it’s magically embedded in this post for your viewing pleasure.

Ms. Lohan is saying that she has the same single-name recognition as Oprah, Madonna, or Cher. I don’t think so, sweetie. Until now, I didn’t even THINK about associating you with the Lindsay or Lindsey or however-it’s-spelled mentioned in the ad. Now, if the baby had said Oprah, Madonna, or Cher, I would have immediately associated with the respective celebrity. But Lindsay?? It is a much too popular name to be associated with only one person.

So, she thinks she is entitled to $100 million because the ad so closely resembled her that it was unquestionable (in her mind) that it was aimed at her. Well, in my opinion, the baby is much cuter and probably a good deal more intelligent. And, I wonder when exactly it was that she last enjoyed a glass of milk. According to a news broadcast on KTUL-TV, because she has been in rehab for substance abuse, the “milkaholic” comment was a gig at her.

I think she is paranoid and looking for a quick, easy payday. I hope E*Trade sticks to their guns and does not settle this frivolous lawsuit. I further hope they pull a judge who has enough common sense to recognize this for the desperate grab that it is. Maybe the E*Trade babies should sue her back.

Goodbye, Uncle Zeb, you are fondly remembered

Carl Bartholomew, best known to adults in Eastern Oklahoma as Uncle Zeb, passed away yesterday at 78, according to an article at KTUL-TV in Tulsa. The reason I say best known to Adults is because he was best known to kids – when we were kids. From 1969 until 1979, Uncle Zeb would host the Cartoon Camp watched by thousands of children from all over northeastern Oklahoma.

I didn’t live in Oklahoma very much of that time, I mostly lived in Florida and Texas. The way I came to know Uncle Zeb is during my summer visits to my aunt and uncle’s place. Every summer, my brother and I would spend practically the whole summer in Oklahoma and give my parents a much needed rest. Mostly rest from my little brother because I was so perfect. One of our favorite shows was the Uncle Zeb show.

Of course, he had other duties at the station as well, including promotions director, but we kids didn’t know that, or care for that matter.

So, goodbye Uncle Zeb, you are fondly remembered.

Some Commercials are Worth Watching

I, like many of us, can do without the commercials on television that reduce my 1 hour show to about 40 minutes, if I’m lucky. Sometimes, it sems like we get 3 minutes worth of show and 5 minutes worth of commercials. And, what really ticks me off is when networks put that little popup at the bottom of the screen to advertise a show or movie, especially when it takes up a full third of the screen.

Anyway, I guess I shouldn’t gripe too much because it keeps us from having to pay for off-air television as some countries do. Plus, there are a few commercials that are worth watching. I found this Bud Light commercial on the Smoking Section website and about fell out of my chair laughing. I don’t know if it has seen air time, but it has definitely seen you-tube time.

Can Your Marriage Endure World Scrutiny?

I have never watched Jon and Kate Plus 8, and probably never will, so I won’t be writing about that show. The media are now reporting there possibly are problems with their marriage, in fact, it seems to be front page news on TV and magazines. There seem to be quite a few people criticizing them for their marital problems. I’m not going to defend their decision to air their personal lives on television for all the world to see, but I try to place myself in someone else’s place before I criticize them.

First of all, I don’t think I would ever open up my personal life for all the world to see, but I’ve never had that offer. They did and now they are having to live with the consequences of their decision, though I’m sure they had no clue as to what they were getting into.

Now, I think I have a wonderful marriage. My wife and I are best friends, first and foremost. We respect each other and trust each other. We feel as if a piece of us is missing when we are apart, and we enjoy each other when we are together. We can function apart, but work seamlessly as a team. I think we have a wonderful relationship. Yes, before you slam me, we do argue from time to time. We are still individuals and have different ideas about some things. Even though there are times we argue, or agree to disagree, the good times vastly outweigh the bad.

We don’t have a television camera stuck in our face 24/7. I’m pretty sure that would add just a bit of stress to our lives and stress causes problems. We have only 2 children, which is stressful enough at times, and I can’t imagine 8. I would think that Jon and Kate have enough pressure with 8 children without the added problems of the television crew.

So, before you criticize, try to imagine yourself and your spouse with 8 small children and how hectic your life would be. Then add that to the television crew in your house and following you around.

I still think that reality TV has gotten way out of hand, but as long as there are viewers, there will be these shows.

Are Reality Shows Sinking to a New Low?

As you might figure out from reading here, I tend to watch Good Morning America before I go to work. That is actually a good source of ideas because they give a good overview of the news, even news of stupid stuff. Well, this morning, it was reported that Nadya Suleman had entered into negotiations with some un-named producer to star in her own reality show. Too bad The Biggest Loser is already taken as it would be an appropriate title for this show.

I’m not so against reality shows. I enjoy watching The Amazing Race and I’ll sit through Survivor, but somewhere there has to be a line that should not be crossed.

Are networks so desperate for viewers that they would stoop so low? I guess it is only in America where one can be so phenomenally stupid, get some equally stupid producer to put you on TV in your own reality show, and profit. Television is certainly earning its boob-tube moniker.

This is one show I will not be watching.
