Our pets are affected by this heat just as much or more than we are. Here are some tips to protecting your pet during these 100+ days. [...]

I know I’ve been posting it’s so hot jokes, but all joking aside, our furry family members rely on us to keep them safe. Here are some tips to keeping our pets safe during this blast-furnace heat.

Never leave your pet in a parked car alone, even in shade. Ever.

Always provide fresh cool water. Take it with you if you are traveling with your pet.

Watch for dehydration. An overheated dog will drool excessively, become lethargic, and have bloodshot eyes.

Take walks early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler.

If the pavement burns your feet, it will burn theirs. Be careful of hot pavement. Check paws after a walk.

Most dogs like to swim. If you have access to a lake, pond or pool, let your dog cool off. It is probably a good idea to rinse them off after a swim.

Dogs cool from the bottom up. Spray their paws and stomach, not just the top.

Don’t overfeed your pet. In hot weather, overfed pets can overheat.

Be careful of sunburn. Yep, they can sunburn, too. There are pet sunscreens available.

Know your pet. You will be the first to notice when your baby isn’t acting right.

If you have any tips, please feel free to comment.

Sasha the lioness attacks Sassy's beloved Squirrel. [...]

I may have mentioned before that we have 2 Great Danes, Shadow and Sassy, and a kitten, Sasha. Well, actually, the kitten is my son’s while he’s between apartments, but she’s made herself quite at home.

Sassy is our 4-year-old Dane. Her most favorite toy in the whole world is a stuffed squirrel with 2 squeakers inside. If Shadow picks up Squirrel, Sassy is right there to take it back. She does NOT share Squirrel – with anyone or anything.

The other day, Squirrel was in the floor, Sassy was outside, so she had no clue what was about to happen to her beloved Squirrel.

I watched as Sasha spied her prey, hunkered down and lunged. The direct hit caused the one remaining working squeaker to squeak emphatically. I’m not sure who won, but here’s the video. It’s a little dark because I had no time to turn on extra lights.

When Sassy, the youngest of our 2 Great Danes, was just a little pup, we bought her a stuffed squirrel from Petco that had 2 squeakers in it – 1 in the tail and 1 in the body. She loved it!

She would walk around the house squeaking everywhere she went. She got so good at it, she could open and close her mouth so fast as to almost produce a continuous squeak.

Now, several squirrels later (they do tend to wear out), 4-year-old Sassy will find her squirrel and have it close by at all times. As soon as she comes in the house, she will go get her squirrel and show it to anyone she thinks needs to see it. She will have it next to her food dish when she’s eating and on her bed when she’s sleeping. And, as you can see, she has it in the living room when she’s just kicking back.

If you’ve ever had a Great Dane, you know they rank high in pet society. They are very smart, very loving dogs that are known as gentle giants. They are a very even-tempered breed that is very good with children. The only danger I’ve ever witnessed to small children is the likelihood of being stepped on or leaned against. Danes are notorious leaners.

Sometime between last Sunday evening and Monday morning (4/25 – 4/26), a new buffalo was born at Sequoyah Bay State Park. I waited until I got pictures before I posted anything. Not sure yet if it is male or female since mom and dad are VERY protective and won’t allow anyone near.

But, the light brown calf was happily romping between mom and dad this afternoon allowing us to get some great photos. No news on a name, yet, but as soon as I hear, I’ll post a follow-up.

If you get a chance and live close, come on out and see the new baby.

Apparently, Telly the Whale was fed up with living in captivity and entertaining people in exchange for a few fish. At SeaWorld in Orlando, a trainer was killed by Telly the Whale in what is at this time being called an accident.

According to the article from ClickOrlando, this is not the first incident with this whale resulting in death or injury to a trainer or other personnel.

I’m not one to say there should be no zoos or marine parks because I enjoy a good day trip to the zoo or to SeaWorld to view and learn about animals I would otherwise never get to see. But, sometimes I wonder… what are they thinking?

Veterinarians are warning about canine influenza, or dog flu. Dog flu is a contagious respiratory disease in dogs caused by a specific Type A influenza virus referred to as a “canine influenza virus.” This is a disease of dogs, not of humans.

If you have a dog, you should contact your veterinarian to see if you should immunize your pet.

There has long been a debate on the separation of church and state and how, on publicly owned property, we should refrain from anything to do with any religion. We can’t have the Ten Commandments in our courthouses or other public buildings, even though most of our laws are based on them. The Supreme Court has upheld that public or government buildings or land should remain religion neutral. But, what if it is called education instead of religion? Is it okay then?

Anna Falling, candidate for mayor of Tulsa, Oklahoma, has resurrected a debate over a Creationism exhibit at the Tulsa Zoo. In fact, according to an article by News on 6, she has made it a big part of her platform. Apparently, this debate began about four years ago when an exhibit telling the story of creation was rejected. Falling is bringing it back to life saying the zoo has other religious icons there, including a Hindu god. Supporters belife that if Hindu religion can be represented, then so should Christianity.

Friends of Religion and Science take the stance that the religious references at the zoo are there for education of different cultures, not for a promotion of a certain religion. I’m all for education or religions because I believe that someone who knows more about what they believe in can believe much more strongly and be able to defend their beliefs. If we change it from religion to theory, then the Christian belief of creationism can be taught as a theory instead of a religion. That should fit in nicely.

If the zoo includes other religions for educational purposes, then what is the harm of including Creationism as part of the education? A well-rounded education should include all sides of an argument so the student can then apply his or her own values and make a decision as to which is right and which they want to believe.
