The Muskogee Phoenix editorial page has a great view on life in Muskogee after the senseless, cowardly shooting at Arrowhead Mall. [...] The chili cook-off was crowded, but no appreciable problems. The food was great, the bands were loud, but good. All in all it was a great day. Until a little after 4. [...] Some potential problems have arisen for Mayor Hammons’ nominee for vacated council seat of Bob Luttrull. [...] Stanley Slader is re-opening Thunderbird this month. Personally, I will welcome the Friday night sounds again, but I realize that some people will not, especially those living close to the fairgrounds. It will be interesting to see what happens that first race night as far as how many people complain about the noise. [...] There really is not a better place to live in Oklahoma than Muskogee! We really do have a great city, rich with history. As you can see, we do have the talent and a wonderful musical past. The Chamber of Commerce did a wonderful job with this video, as did all those who participated. We now know why the Rougher coaching staff are, well, coaches… [...] Now, there is another source of news and entertainment for Muskogee – Leif Wright’s MuskogeeNOW. It has only been up and running for just a few weeks now and, to tell the truth, I had a few doubts at first. But, I subscribed my RSS reader to his site and am very happy to notice more content coming online every day and am now positive this enterprise is going to grow and thrive. [...] It’s Christmas time here in Muskogee./There’s much to do for all us Okies./Gifts to buy sure keeps us hoppin’,/So off to Walmart to do the shoppin’. [...] Every so often, federal and state laws change and that usually means that local laws and ordinances must change with them. Same goes for the governing document of the City of Muskogee – the city charter. Even in the absence of federal or state law changes, it is a good idea to partially review sections of the charter from time-to-time and make sure we are keeping up with the times. [...] Customer service is priority 1. Or, should I say, when the customer feels like he or she is priority 1, that is great customer service. More banks need to be like BancFirst. [...] My 22-year-old son needed a new car, so we went with him yesterday to help him out a bit. To tell you the truth, I was NOT looking forward to this. I’ve been in too many dealerships where the pressure is on and you feel like a slime if you even think about leaving without one of their cars. I mean, how dare you turn down their generous offer to help you out because, of course, that is their only interest. When you show the least bit of hesitation, the sales manager comes in to assault you. They never want to tell you the best price for the car, but what your payments will be, so they want to run your credit first. I don’t play that game any more. [...] They railroaded the City. According to the Muskogee Daily Phoenix article, the veterans threatened city councilors if they did not vote for flying the POW/MIA flag at the Muskogee Civic Center, they would campaign against them in the next election. They even got the City Council to agree to pay for it to the tune of $10,000 – $12,000. [...] All of our veterans, no matter which era they served, peacetime or wartime, deserve to be praised and held as heroes. Our veterans deserve the very best in health care, they deserve the very best in benefits, they deserve more than the blame-game played against them every day. These men and women have gone to fight and die for this country either in a righteous war or a politician’s folly. In either case, they were doing what must be done. Our president said, “Go” and they went. Very few came back. [...] People are ready for change. There’s no doubt about it. Muskogee elected a 19-year-old mayor in the hopes he would bring new and bright ideas to Muskogee. America elected their first African-American president on the hopes that the same old B.S. would not continue. People want change and they’ve made their message loud and clear. However, people need to not take a change as a good thing simply because it is something different? [...] A council of 9 people help balance any inexperience of a mayor or council member with the experience of others. This is what is happening now. A bad city manager can be fired at any time, whereas a bad strong mayor is there until election time and can bankrupt a city before anyone could stop him. [...] Being a camp host at Sequoyah Bay definitely has its pleasures. The biggest pleasure is Sunday afternoons when the park is almost empty. That is the time my wife and I can sit back and take it easy. [...] |
