I just bought a used car and declined the warranty from the dealership.  I’ve been seeing these ads for StopRepairBills.com on tv and thought I’d check into it and see what they offer.  I went to their website and filled in the form to get a quote.  It wasn’t long before my phone was ringing.

I answered to a fast-talking salesman who basically told me how I would be financially devastated without their service contract and that they have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

So, I gave them the year, make and model of my car and he quoted a price for about $4000 for 5 years and up to 100,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty on my car, with a low down payment of $278 and about $180/month.  That’s more than the payment on my car, and half of what I paid for it.

I asked if they had other options, to which he replied that it would only save me about $200 over the life of the contract, so why bother?

So, I politely told him that I was just checking around and want to check a few more places before making my decision.  He warned me that he might not be able to hold that “great price” very long and which card do I want to charge the down payment to.  I again informed him that I was shopping around and he cut in again with the “great price available today only” and which card do I want to charge that to.

So, I told him if the price was going to change that quickly, then I don’t think I want to deal with his company after all, to which he replied that he just couldn’t guarantee that “special price”, but I could charge the down payment to my card and get a refund later if I found something better, which he assured me I would not.

I then told him that he made my decision for me, I would definitely not deal with a company that used such high-pressure sales tactics and had to actually hang up on him because he would not shut up long enough for me to disconnect politely.

I started checking on the internet, starting with the Better Business Bureau.  The BBB report told me they are also known as National Dealers Warranty, Inc. and, in fact, have an F rating with the BBB.  I read other sites like this one at complaintsboard.com and didn’t like what I saw.  I’m very glad I didn’t allow myself to be pressured into buying.

Over the next couple of days, they called back and I reminded them that I decided not to use them and don’t call again.  I finally stopped answering my phone when it was them and they got the hint… I think.

So, I think I will take my chances without a warranty.  There are legitimate companies out there, but do your research.
