Being a camp host at Sequoyah Bay definitely has its pleasures. The biggest pleasure is Sunday afternoons when the park is almost empty. That is the time my wife and I can sit back and take it easy. Don’t get me wrong, we enjoy it when the park is full, also. It is nice to walk around and watch families and friends sitting around, talking, laughing, children playing, and lying about the fish that got away.
On non-holiday weekends, people start arriving around Thursday to stake their claim to that perfect camp spot. Friday nights are usually the busiest when they rush home from work, hook up the camper, and high-tail it to us for a weekend of camping.
We get to meet all sorts as we collect their money, listen to them gripe about the rate increase that went into effect last year and the occasional tenter who says, “What, we have to pay? We thought it was free.” After bursting their bubble and collecting their money, they are set.
But, then again, we get some clever people who start their camping odyssey on Sunday. In fact, we’ve had 6 pull in tonight, so I had to go to work (sigh). They all had the same reason for pulling in today… to be able to capture the spot they want.
All in all, though, Sundays are quiet here, except for holiday weekends. Only a few more weeks until July 4th. Woo-hoo!
